This friend may have been more able-bodied, but she was no less poverty-stricken than Tommy. Her name was Ailie Lindsey, later in young adulthood to become a waitress in the Traill restaurant, and she was able to assist in Bobby’s search for sustenance only with the help of her grandmother’s shoes. Otherwise, she would have had to take the painful, and non-respectable, option of going barefoot.

The culmination of Ailie’s and Tommy’s contribution to Bobby’s welfare occurred when they rounded up the ragged children of the neighbourhood to collect money for Bobby’s dog licence, not realizing that the Lord Provost was going to pay for this.
